As you see in these trout pictures, they have a body shape similar to that of salmon. Other physical characteristics include:

• Small, light, irregular shaped spots on a silvery-to-dark background, but color can vary considerably at different seasons and between populations
• Males and females are similar, with males having a slightly longer, more pointed snout
• Lake trout can be distinguished from other chars by the absence of pink spots and their deeply forked tail
• The flesh of lake trout varies from creamy white to deep orange

A general knowledge of lake trout habits can pay off handsomely for you, as these trout pictures attest. Using bright spinners or spoons while fishing from shore or near inlet and outlet streams can prove to be very successful.

In addition, trolling slowly through deep, colder water layers and along steep rock walls or drop offs produces good catches of lake trout. Lake trout populations are susceptible to over harvest, so practicing good conservation will go a long way towards ensuring healthy populations for all future anglers.
