Fishing Gear

Suggested Fishing Gear

It’s important to have the right gear when you’re fishing at Frontier Fishing Lodge. It can make the difference in your trip. So, what should you bring? Good question. Here’s what we recommend:

Lake Trout:

7 – 8 ft. medium-heavy action trolling or spinning rod coupled with a reel suited to hold at least 160 yards/10 lb test. We strongly recommend at least 40 lb. test (10 lb diameter) metered braid for your main line, as well as a fluorocarbon leader slightly smaller than your main line. In terms of Fly rods, a 9 ft. 8, 9 or 10 weight will get the job done. You will need a reel that has a good drag system and the capacity for 150 yards of 30# Dacron backing. 24 ft. long sinking tip lines in 200 grain and 400 grain weights with floating running lines, or full sinking density compensated lines in type 5 or type 6 are also recommended. 9 ft. leaders ending in 20-30 lb flourocarbon tippet are necessary.

Arctic Grayling:

4-6 ft. light-medium action spinning rod with 4-8 lb. mono is a common choice for the any angler, but by far the most popular way to catch Arctic Grayling is on a fly rod. A 9 ft. 4 or 5 weight rod and reel is ideal, coupled with WF4 or WF5 floating line, and 12 ft. long leaders of 5X and 4X tippet.

Northern Pike:

7 ft. medium-heavy action spinning/bait cast rod, with 20-30 lb. braided line and a 30 lb wire leader is recommended. 9 ft. 8, 9 or 10 weight fly rods, paired with a reel capable of holding 150 yards of 30# Dacron backing should also do the trick. Pike taper floating line, 10 or 13 type 3 or 4 sinking tip with floating running line, and 9 ft. long pike leaders with wire shock tippet are commonly used.
